POV RAY

Postby Alain » 12 Jun 2009, 06:47

As I am playing with Zoe and Lucy in PovRay ,

I made some tutos , for me , and for isa

http://closed.forumactif.com/3d-faq-and ... -t2538.htm

If you want , Thyme , I could add here what is useful .

By the way your own tutos are very well done , I just added on mines what I discovered when using PovRay

Thanks much for writing this povray tutorial Alain :)
I have been playing with povray most of the day. I began wanting to povray techuelife island and add some ground fog (a fog feature not available to vrml) but found that seamless does not export viewpoints (with perspective ticked) to povray.

I got lost today for a how to do this conversion, nothing seemed to follow a pattern.
So i wondered if there were other programs that did this.
I searched the net and found this interesting free program vrml2pov:

http://www.chemicalgraphics.com/paul/vrml2pov/

and got it working but sadly the viewpoint was not the same as what you see in contact or seamless.(seamless is same as contact when perspective is ticked)

Then later today (after I accepted it must be too hard if vrml2pov can not do it lol ) I played some more with a povray camera (a povray viewpoint) and I got the same view in povray I see in seamless :) I hope tomorrow to figure out the science for the conversion :)

Isa was saying povray is all in english and so not easy for her, this is one reason I want to make it so she and others will not need to learn a whole new program/language to make povray photos/movies, (by making seamless convert to povray what you see), however hand coding will still offer something for those who will want to play with pov-ray's more advanced features.

You can use a PlaceTexture node to transform a Part's texture map alain. You plug the PlaceTexture node into the Seamless node and plug the Part reference into the PlaceTexture node.
The PlaceTexture has fields much the same as a VRML TextureTransform.
However you may not be wanting a PlaceTexture here. The TextureMapper can do most things you need in a more direct way.
I want to get the TextureMapper to be able to map an imported mesh more easily Alain but I will need to play with this more before I can explain this well.
You are keeping me very busy Alain  but it is all good work and I appreciate the good questions you ask

well , I guess because it is as in that sentence
"we demand more to friends " LOL

but more seriously it is sure that mixing seamless and PovRay , we get new questions :)

btw you will stop me , I hope , when I will ask you if seamless3d is able to make me growing my tomatoes :)

...

OK thanx , I will try your answers

I just realized you wont be able to use a PlaceTexture for a blue part directly.
If this was allowed it would keep transforming the texture for each build cycle (for example it would keep scaling it bigger and bigger)
This is one reason I made most build nodes not be able to directly reference blue parts.
What you would need to do is have your imported mesh contained in a blue part and use a CopyPart node to copy this mesh into a white Part.
Then after the CopyPart you can have the PlaceTexture (reference the white part).

I am thinking I will make the TextureMapper be able to directly reference a blue part as I don't think this will have any unwanted side affects.

As I have not done much of this yet alain dont waste too much time on this please, If it is not easy I will help you find an easy solution :)

btw I think that it is may be possible to replace an anim ,

for instance "hello" in "zoe red mini skirt "

by a BVH anim ...

I dont know how to do in seamless ,
so I tried to édit the 2 smls , with vrmlpad ,
and copiing - pasting one anim to another one ...

but I didnt succeeded

reedit

I tried that

but no more success

finaly I mixed hand editing ( the smls file ) and seamless3d

..still some mistakes , but I could dance with her :)

http://mixed3d.free.fr/alain/ghost/ghostlucyavatar.wrl

...

so I got that with Pov-Ray
( the avi is 2.6 MO but 50% of what we could get from the Bvh anim

I had fun showing Miranda this Saturday in seamless chat (while at Maya the bee) your dancing BVH movies that had the cat and Zoe heads added Alain
Well done with getting the BVH animation to work for Zoe's legs and dress while maintaining Zoe as a single mesh.
Glad to hear you are learning valuable hacking skills for smls files Alain :) (I will write an smls pad to help here when I get a chance)
However you should be able to import a BVH file into into an existing avatar but you must rename the parts after importing the BVH file (or rename the parts for the avatar) so that the names all match.
Once you have matching names for your parts and have the pivot points in the same locations you can then import the animation from one smls file into another.
For how to import animation from one smls file to another see importing gestures:

1- yes , I did , but as they have not exactly the same hierarchy , it is not very easy , or long

2 - yes

coz it crashed seamless3d , or I made some mistake ( ?)

anyways , I had great fun to play with all that

..and ..many BVHs are free to use , Thyme :) ( under CC license )

Yes your right Alain the skeleton structures must match too, you are speaking from the real world unlike me right now who is just speaking theory
When I can find the time I will try making a Lucy or Zoe use a more standard BVH skeleton structure and add a feature for matching the BVH default pose with the avatar's default pose (so for example if the arms are down for the BVH file and are at an angle of 45% degrees for the avatar, the imported animation can be adjusted to suit the avatar)

I don't know if you found a bug in seamless that made it crash, I know though it is very easy to not have every part name match and not be able to see why without a lot of careful checking, I need to see the 2 files Alain, can you send me them please?
I will some day of course make seamless more friendly by letting the user know when names don't match by not crashing but seamless could be easy right now is my guess if we had avatars with more standard BVH skeletons and matching BVH names.

ok , an example :

I got

http://mixed3d.free.fr/alain/ghost/jumpfinal85.bvh

from mocapdata ( CC license )

I opened it in seamless3d then save

http://mixed3d.free.fr/alain/ghost/jumpfinal852.smls

I opened

your

http://mixed3d.free.fr/alain/ghost/zoe_ ... skirt.smls

right click on "hello" ....paste ...replace ...import ..Anim nodes from file ...open "jumpfinal852.smls"

then crach

Thanks Alain :)
I got it so the mocapdata.com file could be imported, right click here to download

This is what I did.
I opened the mocapdata.com file in one instance of seamless and opened zoe in another instance of seamless.
Then I copied and pasted the part names (one part at a time) from the mocapdata.com skeleton to Zoe's skeleton.
This is in fact easier than using a text editor (including vrmlpad) because seamless automatically changes the name of any reference to the part else where in the file.
When I found no equivalent part in Zoe like for example some of the finger joints and buttock joints (lol did not know there were such a thing) I inserted new part nodes in Zoe's skeleton but because I have not yet given any vertex ownership to these new parts they are only there for compatibility reasons.

I am surprised the imported animation looks as good as it does considering I have done nothing more than this.

The animation for arms need to be recalculated for Zoe's default pose
I recalculated an animation using some SeamlessScript for an avatar mars sent me that was made for 3d studio max, I will see if I can find dig up this script I wrote and apply it to the mocapdata.com data file.

(PS I have left Zoe's old animations intact, they can be removed but there is no need to do this)
