The 15th submission.

Distant Planet -- Part 1 (We have landed)

"20 years after the previous search, the search for not only Hoppie_2, but also Hoppie_3 Hoppie_4 has started back up thanks to the unusual visitors."

Despite multiple setbacks since August 29th, 2021, the 15th submission has finally been completed (had to reduce the rocket's quality to a cylinder though).

Besides the crashes causing my inability for "screenshot" renders, no new issues were found.

And as promised in the 13th submission's notes back in May 2021, I did send in the low-poly versions of 4 of the models (as .smls files) in case you ever think of throwing them into the server, so it's time to check your Sea of Spam.

Note: Hopefully I'll be able to complete the news submission before the end of next month (depending on if the "screenshot" render will ever stop crashing or if POV-Ray images are allowed in news submissions (whichever one happens first)), so until then, hope you have a great Halloween.

Thanks Evan, I got your email with the models.
When creating screenshots, the window size must be set to certain dimensions such as 1280 720 or 1920 1080. You can specify the size in settings as shown in the Making 3D Animated Movies tutorial: http://www.seamless3d.com/making-movies/index.html
It was not until some time after I implemented screenshots for the OpenGL version that I learnt it won't work for any window size like it did for the DirectX version. I am not sure what the issue is exactly yet but I will add some code to prevent it from crashing.

Sounds sad you had to reduce your rocket to a cylinder. If you send me the smls file I can see what can be done to maintain your original shape. I am guessing it is a nurbs lathe?

I was thinking I could put a link at the end of the Techuelife island news story to your continuation of the story stating it is an alternative fan version (an alternative to my continuation that has not yet been published) if you are happy with that?

I have noted a few things after seeing this.

Firstly, the rocket had to be reduced to a cylinder, as when I tried to convert the rectangles to NURBS patches for use as the fins, it created another rectangle, but this time I wasn't able to interact with it. As a result I had to reduce the rocket to a cylinder.

2. About the news updates, yes. I'll allow it (you'll have to note the liftoff in the official news though, even though that hasn't been updated in 20 years).

3. After sending in the models, I checked Seamless Chat, but the worlds have once again stopped loading.

That's all for now. Have a good rest of today.

Edit: I opened the file again, and it's also corrupted, even though I followed instruction.

Edit #2: I couldn't find the survival guide, as its location wasn't listed anywhere on the site.

Lathe & Nurbs Patch Combination

It may greatly help me find the bug if you send me your rocket file with the lathe that you are unable to progress from.

To be sure you do not loose all your work, as stated in the survival guide, make lots of backups. To be sure your backup files are uncorrupted, close seamless down and then open them in seamless but do NOT save them after checking they are OK. It is impossible for seamless to corrupt a backup file if you do NOT thereafter save it with seamless.

The files you sent me were saved with 3.007. I know these files are working fine but before reporting a bug please make sure you're using the latest version as it can be very unproductive for me to test for bugs from out dated versions.

It does not help me much to isolate a bug if you do not specify which instructions you are following. I have no tutorials for Seamless3d 3 showing how to make the models you have sent me, they are your experimental work. There is nothing wrong with experimenting outside of my tutorials but the more you go outside what is documented, the less you can expect things to work. This is why it is important for me to write more seamless3d 3 tutorials as this will help document what exactly seamless3d 3 is capable of.

I tried adding lathes and RectangleBuild nodes and had no problem converting the rectangles to patches and opening the files after saving them, however I am aware that there has been problems with seamless3d 3 (at least with earlier versions of it) using a combination of stitched patches and non converted build nodes. Since I generally convert everything to patches (all of my focus has been on making models using nurbs patches for seamless3d 3 so far), I avoid saving files with a combination of non converted nodes and stitched patches and so the practice of saving files with a combination is not yet well tested for Seamless3d 3

PS I have fixed a bug that arises when converting a non mirror BoxBuild (not to be confused with a RectangleBuild) node to stitched patches for the upcoming version.

PS The Seamless3d chat server is not currently running. I found a bug that caused a crash when opening techuelife island. I will run the server again after uploading 3.011 which has the bug fixed.

Best wishes

Sorry Evan my mistake, I never exactly stated make lots of backups in the survival guide but I have updated it now to stress the importance of it. I have also added a "Things to Avoid" list which includes:
1/ Saving files with a combination of stitched patches and build nodes that have not yet been converted to patches

When build nodes were added to seamless3d 2 there was no issue of them potentially causing problems if you did not convert them and saved files with a mix of converted stitched patches and non converted, because there wasn’t the option of stitching patches then. This is the hazard of modifying software. I have thought about making it so seamless forces all build nodes to be converted but I am not sure how much it is a problem in the current version and I rather find the bug and fix it if it exists as it can be advantages left the way it is.

best wishes

Hi Evan I have uploaded the latest version 3.011 and have the seamless chat server running again too so techuelife island can be opened again .

I have uploaded your smls files to:
http://www.seamless3d.com/gallery/tvs-official-64/smls/

The first link in the tutorials page is to the Survival Guide but I can see how it might get missed as it has no thumbnail like the rest of the tutorial links have.

I can see now I advised "backup any files your working on regularly!" in the help -> about section inside seamless3d so that is probably why I thought I had this advice in the survival guide which it now does.

best wishes

Hi Evan, With the latest version 3.012 which is now ready for download, when you do a “save” you automatically create a backup of your previous file so you no longer need to do a “save as” to create a backup.
